What To Look For In Orchestral Sample Libraries Is it for sketching or for final output to a client or program? How will you blend libraries that are recorded more dryly compared with those recorded in a large hall? Do you stick with one product family (recorded in the same hall so they might blend) or do you mix and match? For example, all the Cine family of libraries were recorded in the MGM scoring stage at Sony Pictures. How much time do you want to spend learning it? To give you a sense of the difference between the “stock” orchestral sounds found in DAW ROMplers like Logic’s EXS24 and bespoke instruments, the best way is to hear it. To help, we asked composer David Tobin, who has many years of composing, arranging and orchestration credits in film, TV, and theatre and is a master at creating orchestral/crossover scores for advertising and commercials as well as film trailers, to use his experience and share his personal favourites, including the pros and cons of each library.īecause the market is so large, David split up the orchestra and looked at libraries that focus on a specific orchestral section, strings, brass, etc, as well as looking at some all-in-one solutions and other tools that he uses to get the sound and performance his clients depend on him for.

The sheer number of companies producing top-quality software for orchestral sampling has increased substantially of late, and there are more options now for the digital composer than ever before in this ever-expanding ecosystem. Overall, version 5 continues the software's tradition of value and flexibility, and is a superb option for the thrifty producer looking for quality orchestral sounds in a flexible, easy-to-use package.Compiling a list of the best orchestral sample libraries available becomes more and more difficult every year. The dynamic transitioning in GPO4 was already good, and the improvements to it are subtle but welcome. GPO5 is a solid if not earth-shattering update, and although the mixer could be more powerful, at this price, that's by no means a deal-breaker. What's more, with quick loading (the whole Garritan Orchestral Strings bank is a nimble 4GB), string programming feels even more achievable and fun. Throw in first and second violins and you have the sort of sonic flexibility that's often lacking in string libraries at this price point.

The biggest addition, though, is a significant chunk of the original Garritan Orchestral Strings library, comprising a vast array of sonically consistent articulations, both as individual and keyswitched patches, and ranging from solo instruments and small sections (two to six players), to much bigger ensembles and a full orchestral string section. Oh, and there's a new harp (Concert Grand), which uses MIDI controllers to mimic the pedals of the real thing. The new pipe organ, Custom Organ Console, includes 74 stops, and the choir sample set now includes a selection of Aah, Ooh, Oh and Eeh articulations across six sections (soprano, alto, tenor, bass, boys and children).Īmong the main brass instruments (trumpet, French horn, trombone and tuba) are some excellent solo and ensemble marcato, staccato and sustain patches courtesy of Project SAM.
Two new sets of timpani provide a bright and a more rounded option, while a set of four orchestral toms with single hit, roll and flam articulations further expand the percussion palette.
